Define Success On Your Own Terms

When I support entrepreneurs with web marketing at Web Marketing Therapy or work with women on their web-based businesses though Wild Web Women, I’m often reminding these wonderful passionate professionals to stop comparing themselves…

You CANNOT compare yourself to others!

The sooner you break down the habit of comparing yourself or business to others, the sooner you will start to pave our own path and see business breakthroughs.

“Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules,
and build a life you’re proud to live.

Have You Evaluated The People in Your Life Lately?

I love this quote from motivational speaker Tony Gaskins: “Evaluate the people in your life; then promote, demote, or terminate. You’re the CEO of your life.”

I often hear my clients say “I have a really hard time with my ________ (insert web, design, marketing) vendor” then they go on to say why. You don’t have to tolerate mediocre!

We are the product of the people we associate with – personally and professionally.

Think critically about your people and make sure they count!

Diagnosis: Digital Marketing Projection Disorder

In therapy, the term “projection” is used to describe the act of avoiding ownership of one’s behavior by trying to give responsibility another person, organization or thing.

When I see a business leader projecting responsibility for their success on digital marketing, I am quick to diagnose digital marketing projection disorder to help wake them up to reality and get them on the right track.

While digital marketing projection disorder is common, it is also very dangerous.

It is ignorant to expect things like online ads, websites, social media, etc. to magically bring you all the business you desire. People power behavior – behavior powers results. In business, there are three critical areas that must all be working to their fullest to make you money honey:

1) Operations – how well you do what you do. Whether you make and deliver a product or offer a service, your performance is a piece of the puzzle that makes you or breaks you. Happy customers = repeat business and referrals.

2) Admin – how well the business is supported. The #1 reason most small businesses fail is because of failure to collect. No money equals no business honey! Keeping cash flow positive pays the people and vendors who keep the machine running. Your admin procedures are critical.

3) Marketing – how well an organization’s people handle communications, visibility, client connections, service and sales. Marketing is NOT a Facebook page, a website, blog posts, or online ads – those are just example of things that could support awareness, communications, connections, service and sales. These things are tools, tools that need to be driven with strategy and expert execution.

Success is powered by the behavior of people. It takes people to lead operations, administrative work and marketing. You cannot expect tools to take you to where you want to go unless they are powered by the right people. While digital marketing can accelerate growth and success, there are a number of factors that influence results. If online ads are being driven to a crappy website, don’t project blame on the online ads. If a fantastic new website was created with all the best practices (design, copy, search optimization) and sales aren’t pouring in, it’s not the website’s fault, it’s lack of visibility work to drive traffic to the website. Positive behavior is needed to yield positive results. You have to look at the whole puzzle to really see where holes in success lie.

My digital marketing firm supports business leaders in their pursuit of success. When I see people struggle, it often starts with the behavior of the leaders – their willingness to make connections to generate business or hire people to help them do things in a quality manner or fix things that are barriers to their success. Whether we are offering web marketing services like social media marketing, online advertising management, search marketing, online PR or website creation, optimization and management, I always make a point to educate any new client that They are BATMAN, digital marketing is ROBIN.

Digital marketing has your back…it can support you with awareness, information distribution, education, even with customer service and sales, but you need to take responsibility for owning your super powers to succeed (and sometimes that means hiring help or being willing to change). 🙂

If you really want to go to the next level with your business, you have to be willing to grow and that means taking responsibility for changing behavior…your behavior, the behavior of people powering your business or the behavior of the people supporting your business.

We cannot have change until we are willing to change. If something does not fly, say goodbye! More on that in my Hoarding: Digital Marketing Diagnosis post.

Here’s to Happy, Healthy Marketing!

The Power of Personality in Web Marketing

Too many people stress unnecessarily about web marketing. Just the thought of a website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn, search marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, online advertising or Yelp…leads to people crying…HELP!

Here’s how to stop the stress and move your web marketing into success. You ready? The simple step is all about you…healthy ego time baby….

Your personality is what sets you apart from the competition. Pump some positive power into your brand baby!

Companies like Apple, Virgin Airlines and Starbucks have a personality – you get a vibe engaging with these brands. Their distinction sets them apart and creates affinity and loyalty. Political candidates attract voters via the power of their personalities. Media personalities aren’t where they are today without their unique and authentic personalities. Even cartoon characters can create product marketing empires with their “personalities!”

Your personality will drive what web and social media tools you use and how you use them. If you hate writing but are great talking, you can podcast versus blog (and use a great transcriber tool to make what you speak into online content). If you are not comfortable on video, then writing behind the camera might be best. As for what to post on social media or blog about, put your heart into it…what do you care about? What puts fire in your professional belly? Share it!

Write the way you talk and when you post (to LinkedIn, Facebook, etc) on behalf your brand, do it from a place of heart. Robotic posts make we want to reach my hand through my laptop and do brute force interventions!

Your unique personality sets you apart, it makes you human.

People connect with people…humanize your brand, be true to your personality.

And let your junior high school “I want to be like everybody else” fears go…don’t worry about people not liking you. If they don’t, they aren’t your ideal client, adios! Do you want to work with customers who you are continually trying to please or ones who already like you? Time is money honeys! You can help pre-qualify your customers and minimize your sales close time by having a powerful personality online.

Own your value, be true to your values and voice them.

And actually voice them! No “I am too busy” shit, ok?!

Look, I have clients to serve, projects to complete, laundry to do, meals to cook and speeches to prep but I care a whole freaking lot about helping people do web marketing in a way that is meaningful, matters and pays so I am blogging….when you share, it shows you care.

Be true to your personality and watch your web marketing transform.

Virtual marketing hugs,

Quick and Dirty Digital Marketing

I have spent WAY too much time this month cleaning up messes from clients who needed us to unravel “quick and dirty” choices. Haphazard decisions create more time, expense and effort. With digital marketing, it is important to stop, breathe, get educated and plan.

We do not plan to fail, we fail to plan.

Quick and dirty is always quick….but you always end up dirty.

web marketing therapy quote

Take time to research your options with digital marketing – it is so important to self-educate, understand options and get on a plan with a map and directions.

Focus. Dedicate. Commit.

Working in a virtual environment is not for everyone, but it is for me and my team. When clients and colleagues learn the entire Web Marketing Therapy team works virtually, we commonly hear things like:

“How do you all work together if you don’t have an office?”
“I would get so distracted with things around the house if I worked from home!”
“I just can’t make myself sit down to work.”

I love virtual work life and while it’s not for everyone, it’s perfect for me and fantastic for the clients we serve across the country. Team WMT is in California, Arizona, Colorado and Georgia (or working overseas when we travel!) so we cover all time zones for our clients.

Working hard doesn’t mean working all the time, but getting quality work done is about making work a priority.

This is my motto. May it encourage others who want to get out of the rat race and use more of the wonderful web to work anywhere to do it or streamline time commuting, meeting or being in useless meetings to virtualize more of their business!

If you Focus, Dedicate and Commit anything is possible. Even working virtually, all the time or some of the time.

The image selected is something I’m drawn towards because I love the mountains and the snow. It also represents the challenges that increased elevation and cold weather can bring. But a clear beautiful sky makes it all worth the sacrifice when you can see the stars.

Sending my teammates and clients a virtual hello under the stars we all share thanks to the wild, wonderful web!
